This is an email I sent to Noggin, a subsidiary of Nickelodeon.
I am a concerned parent about the contents of Max and Ruby. I don’t think the content materials and subject matters of any of the programs of Max and Ruby are appropriate for children. Some of the inappropriate contents teaches young children to do the following:
- steal
- cheat
- materialism (ie. anyone who is special should get a birthday party. Does that mean if my child doesn’t get her own birthday party – she’s not special??? Or if she doesn’t get a perfectly wrapped present with special paper, she is some how imperfect and unwanted? Since when does material goods make anyone happy? Everyone knows, you’re only happy for a little while, until it gets old! True happiness isn’t found in materialism.
- I can go on and on. To some it up, Max the character hero is a juvenile delinquent. Any programming which supports juvenile attitudes and behaviors as well as materialism is simply irresponsible.
Noggin and similar children programming should teach children good sound moral values. If not, then you’ll end up with a barbaric society. Every responsible parent should do their part and monitor the subject matter of every program their child watches – even when the rating given is TV-Everyone.
