They’re gonna do it anyway

Many people use this line of reasoning to defend immoral acts:

They’re gonna do it anyway. Why not just give in?

Let’s examine how ignorant that statement is. If someone were to say:

  • People will get drunk, why don’t we just legalize alcohol for everyone?
  • People will get stoned, why don’t we just legalize drugs for everyone?
  • Murder has been going on for ages, why don’t we just legalize murder?
  • Children will drown in pools, why do we need to put up fences?
  • People die in car crashes every day, why do we have to wear seatbelts?
  • Teens will have sex with other people, why don’t we just give them condoms?
  • The argument above does not take into account accountability. In other words, it teaches people that you can do anything you want to do AND NOT suffer the consequences. The problem is far too many people find out the hard way that there are consequences to everything you do. By then, it’s too late. They’ve either become an alcoholic, druggy, porn addict, ruined their marriages, destroyed their lives, lost their jobs or killed someone. The list goes on and on.

As you can see, “They’re gonna do it anyway” is a poor argument because it neglects accountability and consequences.
