Preface

Contrary to popular belief, the Church existed before the Bible. The Bible did not formally come together until after the synods of Hippo (AD 393) and Carthage (AD 419). The early church followers did not walk around with printed Bibles in hand because the printing press did not exist until after the 1450’s. In fact, the printing press was invented by Johann Gutenberg. Bibles existed in scroll form and was painstakingly hand-written by monks. When a manuscripted scroll contained errors – it was usually burned (for obvious reasons.)

The Council of Trent (AD 1545-1563)
The nineteenth ecumenical council opened at Trent on 13 December, 1545, and closed there on 4 December, 1563. Its main object was the definitive determination of the doctrines of the Church in answer to the heresies of the Protestants; a further object was the execution of a thorough reform of the inner life of the Church by removing the numerous abuses that had developed in it. (New Advent: Council of Trent)

Who better to interpret the Bible than the Church founded by Christ (Matthew 16:13-20 )? In fact, the Bible states that the Church is the bulwark of truth. (I Tim.3, 15).

Douay-Rheims Bible
The Douay-Rheims Bible, also known as the Rheims-Douai Bible or Douai Bible and abbreviated as D-R, is a translation of the Bible from the Latin Vulgate into English. The New Testament was published in one volume with extensive commentary and notes in 1582. The Old Testament followed in 1609–10 in two volumes, also extensively annotated. The notes took up the bulk of the volumes and had a strong polemical and patristic character. They also offered insights on issues of translation, and on the Hebrew and Greek source texts of the Vulgate. The purpose of the version, both the text and notes, was to uphold Catholic tradition in the face of the Protestant Reformation which was heavily influencing England. As such it was an impressive effort by English Catholics to support the Counter-Reformation.

Although the New Jerusalem Bible and New American Bible are most commonly used in English-speaking Catholic Churches, the Challoner revision of the Douay-Rheims is still often the Bible of choice of Traditionalist Roman Catholics today. (Wikipedia: Douay-Rheims Bible)
